Summary
Students will analyze the regulation's risk-based approach, discuss its potential benefits and drawbacks, and explore the balance between innovation and ethical considerations. Through targeted activities, they will enhance their understanding of legal and technological terminology, practice formal language structures, and engage in critical debate, improving their ability to discuss complex regulatory topics concerning artificial intelligence.
Activities
Students start with a warm-up discussion on AI's societal benefits, risks, the need for regulation, accountability for AI errors, and ensuring human-centric AI development, setting the stage for exploring the EU AI Act.
Learners engage with key legal and technological vocabulary through a matching exercise and apply it in a fill-in-the-blanks context. They also watch a video to understand the AI Act's risk pyramid and its pros and cons.
The lesson focuses on the passive voice and modals of obligation and possibility for regulatory language. Students practice these structures by rewriting sentences and conclude with a structured debate on AI regulation versus innovation.
Vocabulary focus
This lesson highlights key terminology crucial for understanding discussions on AI regulation and technology law. Focus vocabulary includes: regulation, compliance, harmonize, red tape, stifle, surveillance, annual turnover, and human-centric. Students will practice these terms through matching and contextual application exercises.
Grammar focus
The grammar section concentrates on language used in formal and regulatory contexts. Students will learn and practice the passive voice to emphasize actions or rules (e.g., 'AI systems are classified'). They will also master modals of obligation and possibility (e.g., must be informed, could face) to discuss requirements and potential outcomes effectively.
